Wakefield secondary students donate hundreds of items to community food bank

Students at a secondary academy in Wakefield have held a collection for a local food bank as part of the run up to Christmas.

Pupils at Outwood Academy City Fields have donated much needed supplies by holding a food drive for the Eastmoor Community Project Foodbank at St. Swithuns community centre.

The school also donated money from their Christmas Jumper Day to the charity that gives community well-being support and operating a community café providing home cooked and healthy food for people in the area.

The supplies donated includes staples for food parcels such as tinned foods, sauces, pasta, and cereal as well as fresh fruit and vegetables and sweet treats.

Michelle Colledge-Smith, Principal at Outwood Academy City Fields, said: “This year has been a tremendously difficult year for everyone, so we wanted to do something in the run up to Christmas that could help those in our community who need it.

“I was thrilled to see incredible support across the academy for our collection and I am proud of our students for their community spirit they have shown.

“We are delighted that we were able to make a significant donation.”

The academy have strong ties to Eastmoor Community Project and regularly works with the centre with donations or visits for the teenagers at the school.

Christine Bann, manager at Eastmoor Community Project Limited, said: “We would like to thank the students of Outwood Academy City Fields and their parents for contributing to the community food bank and donating their Christmas Jumper Day donations to our foodbank at St. Swithun’s Community Centre.

“We were overwhelmed by their generosity and delighted that we could support families in our Eastmoor community with these gifts. Well done everyone and thank you, we look forward to working with you in the New Year.”
