Public Health England confirm 700th case of coronavirus in Wakefield

More than 320 people in the Wakefield district have now died from coronavirus, it has been confirmed.

A total of 265 people have died from the virus at hospitals managed by the Mid Yorkshire NHS Trust, according to figures released today.

The Office for National Statistics confirmed that, in the period up to Friday, May 15, there had also been 60 coronavirus-related deaths at care homes in the district.

This means there is now around one confirmed case for every 487 people living in the area.

Across the UK, there have now been 248,818 confirmed cases of coronavirus.

A total of 35,341 people have died after testing positive for the virus.

Earlier this week, the UK Government added the sudden loss of taste and smell to the official list of coronavirus symptoms, as well as rolling out testing for anyone over the age of five.
