Wakefield and Pontefract Crematoria reopen grounds to the public

The grounds of Wakefield and Pontefract crematoria have reopened to visitors.

The public is now able to visit memorial sites and gardens at both venues, after Wakefield Council closed their grounds last month.

New national guidance has come into place this week, prompting the move.

However, those visiting the crematoria are still expected to remain two metres apart from each other and the buildings will only be open for funerals and memorial services.

The council's acting chief executive, Andrew Balchin, said: "Closing the grounds of the crematoria was a difficult decision and was taken after considering all the advice and guidance from central government at the time.

“Our priority is to help keep people safe, whilst allowing families to mourn a loved one.

“We have looked at the latest guidance and are now reopening the crematoria grounds. By making this change it means that people can visit and pay their respects to their loved ones. We know how much this matters to people.

“It is important that visitors continue to follow social distancing measures, to help protect themselves and others from the risk of the disease.”

Cemeteries in the Wakefield district continue to remain open.
