Rosie’s owner, Maggie Robinson, became increasingly concerned after Rosie’s mood dropped, after the dog suffered rupture.

Maggie and Rosie live in their home in Normanton.

Maggie said: “Rosie used to be paralysed after her vertebrae went.

“Professionals did a good job with treating her and she was back on her feet after a while - but her mood just was not the same since the trauma, she wasn’t a happy dog anymore.

“As a result of the rupture, she tapped her paws a lot, she was very anxious and had swelling on both sides of her ribs - as well as seeming very frustrated.”

After taking Rosie to the vets, and receiving frequent physio and hydrotherapy sessions, Maggie sought further help from her friend and reiki practitioner, Ali Roffey.

Reiki is a healing technique that is used for stress reduction and relaxation, it is also said to promote healing and contentment.

It is based on the principle that the therapist can channel positive energy into the patient by hands-on-contact, it is also said to activate the natural healing processes of the patient’s body, resulting in restored well-being.

Maggie asked Ali if she would perform weekly one to two hour reiki sessions on Rosie to alleviate her suffering and nerves.

Maggie said: “I knew about Ali’s reiki business and I’m quite spiritual myself, so I asked if she could try and perform it on Rosie to lift her spirits.”

Ali uses techniques involving both hands on and hands off contact with the dog.

Ali said: “I’d heard of reiki on animals before Maggie asked me, and I was eager to try it on Rosie.

“After just four sessions we couldn’t believe the difference. Rosie could stand strongly on her paws, she is now wagging her tail.

“She seems like a very happy dog again - and she keeps getting better with each session we do.”

Maggie has also noticed a huge difference in her dog’s mood since Ali has been performing the reiki sessions with Rosie.

She said: “Reiki has helped her enormously, she’s a lot happier.

“She’s now jumping around and gets very excited, especially when Ali comes to the house for her sessions.

“After just a few sessions, Rosie was walking better and the lumps and swelling on her body reduced a lot.”

Ali became a qualified reiki practitioner in 2005 and has been studying spiritual healing methods for a long time.

As well as her reiki business, called Dakini Reiki, Ali also has a medical background and works as a dental nurse.

She says reiki has been proven to help heal emotionally and can compliment traditional medical treatments.

Ali said: “Reiki compliments traditional medicine and healing, it’s about removing blockages in energy, caused by disease or physical and mental trauma.

“It’s very interesting, ancient civilisations used to use it and it heals people on an emotional level.

“In an epidemic of emotional stress, we’re seeing a lot more anxiousness and depression on people.

“A lot of us work in stressful working environments, so emotionally, a lot of us are detached and reiki can help tackle that.

“One of the only ways the body can release serotonin is through human contact and that is what reiki focuses heavily on.”

“It works similar to yoga, meditation and holistic therapies.

“It heals people on an emotional level, which is important for living in an epidemic of emotional stress, anxiety and depression.

“The treatment she received at the vets helped physically, but the emotional damage was still there.

“That’s why reiki has been important for Rosie, the two treatments complement each other.”

After her success treating her first animal patient, Ali will continue to perform reiki on other animals as part of her business.
