This picture, believed to have been taken in the 1980s, shows shoppers on Silver Street and, in the background, a busy Westgate. Do you remember Hemsworth's BMX track? Or maybe you spent a weekend at Sun Lane leisure centre, playing games on giant inflatables? Children and toddlers lined up to try the balance beam during activities day at Lightwaves Sports Centre. The Wakefield Metropolitan Band prepared for a festive performance at Castleford Civic Centre. Crowds grinned as they waited for the start of the carol concert, equipped with their festive programmes. Do you remember the pancake day races in Wakefield precinct? Runners were off to a flying start during this event. The statue of Queen Victoria is returned to Wakefield Bullring. She was later removed in 2010 as part of the renovation of the Bullring, and now rests in Coronation Gardens, close to County Hall. Today, the future of the ABC cinema site is uncertain - but there was a time when it was at the heart of the city. What are your favourite memories? The centre's decorations were the stuff of legends New school starters at Stockingate 1st School, South Kirkby. These little 'uns might not be so small these days! Hundreds of runners took part in the Wakefield Express half marathon in 1985. Did you ever join the race? Pupils got a real treat during this fire service visit to Horbury's Northfield Lane infant school. Members of the Ossett Women's Institute gather for lunch at Ossett Welfare Hall. Nostalgia March 1985 It was all hands on deck for the Floral Art display at Hill Top Chapel, Flockton. A family feed the birds at Newmillerdam during heavy snow at Newmillerdam. Sculpture makers try something new at Bretton Sculpture Park - now better known as YSP. The Mayor and councillors gather to meet with the Queen during her visit to the city in 1982. Were you among the hundreds to line the streets and cheer her arrival? In December 1983, the city was badly flooded, with many houses and roads badly damaged. Here, one driver braves the depths of the flood in a Mini. It was all smiles at the Whitwell Main Hotel, Streethouse, as the darts team gathered for a group snap.
