A schoolgirl will see her motif design in lights this Christmas after winning a competition that encouraged pupils to get creative.

Parish councillors invited the children at Allerton Bywater Primary to design a festive motif for outside their school in November 2021.

Now, a year later, the winning design will be lit up outside the school as a part of the village’s Christmas Lights display on Saturday November 19.

Nine-year-old pupil Isabella Hobson was declared the winner with 41.2% of the vote after the five best designs from the school went to a public vote on Facebook.

A parish councillor for Allerton Bywater, Jonny Trayer thought of the competition last year after being inspired by a similar idea elsewhere..

“The idea came from the chair of Allerton Bywater Parish Council sharing with me a story about some wonky Christmas motifs designed by children in another part of the country as I am responsible for organising the Christmas Lights display and switch on event in the village.

Coun Trayer added: “We currently don’t have any other plans to run the competition again, however, should an opportunity to increase our display again we would look to do something to involve the children in the village as the Parish Council are very focused on doing the best for the young people in the village.”
