And Gateway Funeral Services is now encouraging the touching act of remembrance this Christmas.

It has installed special Letters To Heaven post boxes at its Yorkshire branches in Birkenshaw, Wibsey, and Batley.

The independent family-run business hopes to foster a sense of community and support during the festive season – giving comfort to those who want to write down their feelings, in special messages to family and friends they have lost.

The heartfelt Letters To Heaven initiative follows the success of a similar endeavour launched at Gedling Crematorium in Nottinghamshire, where a young girl's touching request, to send letters to her departed grandparents, gained ‘overwhelming’ community support.

The crematorium provided a special post box which received 100 letters and calls to extend the service to provide comfort during anniversaries throughout the year.

Gateway Funeral Services is embracing the idea and hope to replicate the success of the initiative in Yorkshire, encouraging individuals to share their thoughts, memories, and love with the departed.

Their three branches will each host a Letters To Heaven postbox.

The free service will be managed by the team at Gateway Funeral Services, not Royal Mail, and does not require postage.

Like prayer or meditation, it is hoped the process of letter writing will help people find comfort, acceptance and remembrance during a time of grief.

It can bring therapeutic benefits, allowing people to express their feelings, honour memories and maintain a unique connection with those who have passed.

The funeral service hopes it will help with healing process and becomes a beacon of comfort, allowing individuals to find strength and solace in the simple yet profound act of putting pen to paper.

Lucy Hitchcock, of Gateway Funeral Services, said: “We are shortly going to be installing Letters from Heaven post boxes at all of our three branches - it’s been huge in other areas. We want to encourage letters ready for Christmas.”
