Parents concerned as pupils return to primary school for first time since March

Primary pupils will be returning to school today though many parents are uncomfortable with how quickly restrictions are being lifted.

The government has allowed schools to open for rececption and years one and six from June 1 with social distancing measures in place.

Most people who responded to the Express lockdown survey said they would not be very comfortable or not be comfortable at all with sending their children back to school on the date set by the government.

Schools have remained open to the children of key workers through the pandemic and staff have been making preparations to look after greater numbers of staff and children over the last week.

Wakefield Council leader Denise Jeffery said she was uncomfortable with the date that had been set. Several local authorities around the country expressed similar concerns.

Many schools in the Wakefield district are academies, which means they receive funding directly from the department for education and are not under local authority control.
