This month, Luke Ibbetson, a pupil from Jerry Clay Academy, won a national drawing competition hosted by the Foundation.

The competition, called ‘Bumpman Portrait competition’, asked people from across the UK to draw their own interpretation of Paloma Varga Weisz’s figurative Bump Man sculpture which sits outside the Henry Moore Institute in Leeds.

Paloma Varga Weiz herself chose the winners, including Luke’s interpretation of Bump Man, for which he was commended for his creativity.

Fiona Ibbetson, Luke’s mum, said: “Luke’s school suggested all the students enter the competition.

“There were plenty of pictures of Bump Man from different angles on the website for Luke to choose from to base his interpretation off.

“He drew his submission on the competition deadline day, and earlier this month I received a Twitter notification from Luke’s school informing me that he’d won.”

For Luke’s age group, under 10s, there were two awards up for grabs, the technical award and the creative award.

Luke bagged the creative award for his drawing.

Fiona said: “The next day, a lady from the institute commented as to why she liked Luke’s drawing.

“She said it was because it looked like Bump Man was out of frame, so he could be sitting anywhere, whereas a lot of entrants had drawn Bump Man sat outside the institute.

“We went to school to pick up his prize, he won some lovely art supplies like watercolours, a new sketchpad and a certificate.

“I’m so proud of Luke, he’s done so well during lockdown and his art has come along a lot during this time.”
