Wakefield Markets calls for support from community

There is no denying that the Covid-19 pandemic has had a devastating effect on so many people and businesses.

However, it has also brought out the best in all of us from clapping the doctors and nurses, to raising money for charities, and looking after the vulnerable within the community.

Supporting the local economy

Wakefield Markets have also been supporting local businesses to get them through these extraordinary times.

As the situation becomes more uncertain, on an almost daily basis, and rules and regulations become even tighter, those businesses need your custom even more.

So now is a great time to visit the great indoor and outdoor local markets in Wakefield, Castleford, Ossett, Normanton, Pontefract and South Elmsall.

Each one provides a safe place to ‘Discover, Shop, Enjoy’a huge array of different stalls providing just about everything you need for the home.

Aladdin’s Cave for shoppers

Across the six markets you will find an ‘Aladdin’s Cave’ of great value items. From top quality meat and vegetables to fresh bread, cakes, and delis. From ladies’, men’s, and children’s fashions to hats scarves and gloves. You’ll also find toiletries, plants and flowers, jewellery, luggage, bedding, household and garden furniture, pet shop, and more. You can even have your phone or watch repaired.

And if you want to relax you can pop into the cafes for a coffee and a bite to eat.

The traders have certainly had a difficult year and they really do need our continued support. In lockdown only those offering essential items could open but it is good to see that most have now returned, as restrictions have been lifted. In fact, there has recently been a large increase in casual and permanent traders across all the markets.

The council has continued to help the traders through the pandemic by ensuring those who were eligible to access the Government grant support schemes. It also introduced the ‘Evolve Business Support Programme’, which gives traders access to a business advisor, provides a small grant to help them develop or diversify and the option to defer rent payment if necessary.

However, the footfall in towns and cities is still well down so the council is running a campaign to raise the awareness of the fantastic markets we have close to home.

Whether you’re a regular visitor to the markets or a first timer, call in, as they will always be delighted to see you.

By doing so, you’ll be able to ‘discover’ some great products and stall holders who are passionate about their businesses.

‘Shop’ for some great value, top quality items, and ‘enjoy’ the Covid-safe experience and buzz surrounding the markets.

They are all well worth a visit.
