The local markets campaign brings a challenge to well-known supermarket brands to demonstrate that a wide variety of fresh produce and meats from succulent turkey crowns to specialty cheeses as well as those last minute or hard-to-imagine gifts are all available from local stalls. These markets support 239 small businesses making them one of the most diverse “shopping experiences” under one roof.

The campaign, which includes a fun video, launched this month and has been released via social media, press and radio advertising and online, and comes on the heels of the announcement of a near £5m investment by the council to improve the district’s markets.

Wakefield Council operates six markets in the Wakefield District area - Castleford, Normanton, Ossett, Pontefract, South Elmsall and Wakefield city.

Cllr Richard Forster, Wakefield Council’s Deputy Cabinet Member for Economic Growth, Regeneration and Property, said: “Wakefield’s markets are an integral part of our town and city centre retail and leisure experience, contributing to their sustainability and vibrancy. They provide access to local, fresh produce at affordable prices and provide the perfect environment to support small businesses to start up and grow. Our markets currently support 218 small businesses across the district.

“Local town centre data shows that our markets have also been successful in supporting new businesses to grow and move onto the high street, further supporting the strength of our town centres. They also contribute to the wider tourism agenda, drawing in visitors and associated spend into the district.

Local investment

A £4.4m capital investment will also be delivered in 2022, which will enhance the quality, look and feel across 4 of the Council’s markets in order to attract new traders, customers and ensure they continue to play an important role in our city and town centres.

Other key areas identified for improvement include further investment into modernising the market sites and improved promotions and marketing.
