WORK is set to start on a new £1.4m scheme to ease congestion on the M1 motorway.
An extra lane will be created on either side of the exit slip roads and roundabout at junction 39 near to Durkar.
Traffic lights will also be installed at the bottom of both the southbound and northbound slip roads where drivers join Denby Dale Road.
The Highways Agency will start work on Monday and is expected to be completed next February.
Sujad Hussain, Highways Agency project sponsor, said: “This scheme will make the roundabout far more efficient and safer by regulating competing flows, especially at peak times when traffic heading onto the eastbound A636 through the roundabout and from the northbound M1 can cause queues on the southbound exit slip road.
“Every effort is being made to ensure any inconvenience to drivers and other roundabout users as well as local residents is minimised”
Slip roads may have to be closed overnight on occasion to allow the work to be carried out and diversions will be put in place.
