56.85 per cent turnout in Wakefield Council elections

The counting of votes in the Wakefield Council election has begun.

One seat in each of the 21 wards - a third of the council - is up for election.

The turnout across the district was 56.85 per cent -up from 30.17 per cent in 2014.

The first results are expected to be announced between 3.15pm and 4pm.

A breakdown of turnout in each of the wards is as follows:

Ward 1 - Ackworth, North Elmsall and Upton - 59.11%

Ward 2 - Airedale and Ferry Fryston - 50.8%

Ward 3 - Altofts and Whitwood - 57.8%

Ward 4 - Castleford Central and Glasshoughton - 52.7%

Ward 5 - Crofton, Ryhill and Walton - 63.06%

Ward 6 - Featherstone - 54.08%

Ward 7 - Hemsworth - 52.89%

Ward 8 - Horbury and South Ossett - 63.54%

Ward 9 - Knottingley - 51.98%

Ward 10 - Normanton - 52%

Ward 11 - Ossett - 63.49%

Ward 12 - Pontefract North - 54%

Ward 13 - Pontefract South - 62%

Ward 14 - South Elmsall and South Kirkby - 53.57%

Ward 15 - Stanley and Outwood East - 62.57%

Ward 16 - Wakefield East - 52.44%

Ward 17 - Wakefield North - 55.75%

Ward 18 - Wakefield Rural - 64.57%

Ward 19 - Wakefield South - 63.6%

Ward 20 - Wakefield West - 52.78%

Ward 21 - Wrenthorpe and Outwood West - 49.02%
