Family and friends organised a party to remember for Alice Curtis’ 104th birthday. Alice, a resident at Ashgrove House Care Home in Sandal, celebrated the milestone with a surprise party last Friday.

She said: “It was such a surprise and I didn’t expect it.

“It was out of the blue but really nice.” Alice was born and grew up in Barnsley and won a trophy as a netball player in her teens. She worked at a shirt factory and as a ticket conductor before marrying her late husband Robert Curtis in 1929.

The couple had three children, Donald and Norma and Robert. She has seven grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren and two great, great grandchildren. She also used to live in Wakefield, on Anderson Road and Castleford Road.
