Our homegrown singing sensation Sophie May Williams will perform with mentor in the semi finals of The Voice UK on Saturday.

The teenager will go head to head with Jermain Jackman after she won the public over with her version of Van Morrison’s Moondance last weekend.

Sophie will also perform a solo song as she tries to persuade viewers to vote for her again and send her through to the grand final.

Four acts - one from each team - will be put through. Each artist will sing a solo song and a group number with their mentor the other team member.

Sophie said: “I’ve been really nervous on the previous shows but I didn’t have time to think about it on Saturday so I just enjoyed it so much, even though it was the first live round. I am very excited about being through to the semi finals - Jermain is absolutely incredible but I will do my best, that’s all I can do. I’d like to thank everyone who voted for me and I am just so grateful to even be here.”

The Outwood Grange Academy student, from Wrenthorpe, had to go through to the public vote after missing out on a ‘fast pass’ to the next round, which awarded to fellow Team Will contestant Jermain.

Earlier in the show, judges had praised Sophie’s performance.

Fellow judge Kylie Minogue said: “You have a natural elegance, it was beautiful.” said: “Every note you hit was perfect.”

Sir Tom Jones said: “She just made it her own. You’re a lot prettier than Van Morrison. You look marvellous, you look like a model.”

Finally, Kaiser Chiefs Ricky Wilson said: “I am looking forward to hearing you sing again in the semi finals. You are going to make the kind of record that I am going to buy.”

And other viewers took to Twitter to congratulate Sophie.

Arriva Yorkshire said: “Yey @sophiemaymusic is through, go get ‘em girl. Proud of our #Wakefield lass!”

Mick Amos said: “Yet again raising the bar @sophiemaymusic and doing #wakefield proud! @iamwill come visit her hometown and I’ll buy you some new glasses #glassface.”
