Bishop to be enthroned at Wakefield Cathedral tonight

The new bishop of the diocese of West Yorkshire and the Dales, Rt Rev Nick Baines, will be enthroned at Wakefield Cathedral tonight.

Unlike any bishop before him, he will be enthroned in each of the three cathedrals of the diocese including Bradford Cathedral on Thursday, July 17, and Ripon Cathedral on Sunday, July 20.

A brass band, a procession through the city streets, a fanfare from police trumpeters and bishop-shaped biscuits will get celebrations underway in Wakefield.

Rev Canon Andi Hofbauer, of Wakefield Cathedral, said: “The enthronement of a new bishop is an exciting celebration of a new beginning in the life of any diocese.”

Once he has been anointed as the new bishop, everyone gathered inside the cathedral will go outside into the precinct where Bishop Nick will meet and greet local people and bless the city and the diocese.

The event takes place on Tuesday, July 15. The procession starts at 5.30pm from Wood Street to the cathedral.

After the ceremony, celebrations will continue in the precinct at 6.30pm.
