Bonfire week goes with a bang

A record number of people watched the annual bonfire and fireworks display in Thornes Park on Saturday.

The event, run by Wakefield Council, also included a Guy Fawkes competition, performances by live bands plus fire eaters and jugglers.

Coun Les Shaw, cabinet member for culture, tourism and sport, said: “I am thrilled with how well the bonfire event at Thornes Park went over the weekend.

“We welcomed a total of 27,000 people from across the district – the most people we have ever had at this event – which is absolutely fantastic. It was lovely to see residents of all ages enjoy the bonfire, spectacular firework display and local entertainment.”

Meanwhile, thousands also attended Notton bonfire and fireworks display on the same night.

Committee member Michael Tate said: “On a perfect evening thousands of people arrived to see the attractions. Many arrived early to take advantage of the hot food in the village hall. And the children kept the amusements very busy.

“A large bonfire was lit at 7pm followed at 8pm by a magnificent professional fireworks display.

“The management would like to thank everyone for their support and considerate parking. The donations to charity will be announced at a later date.”
