Terence and Jean Walters met while they were out dancing with friends at The Embassy club on Ropergate in Pontefract.

Mr Walters joined the army soon after but the pair rekindled their romance when he returned home on leave.

Mrs Walters, Eastbourne Avenue, Featherstone, said: “I had known Terence since I was 16 and when he came home he asked to see me.”

A year later the couple tied the knot on Boxing Day at North Featherstone Church.

Mrs Walters said: “It was the only time we could get married because he did not get much time off on leave.

“A fortnight after we got married he went back to the army so we did not have time for a honeymoon.”

Mr Walters, now 78, served in the York and Lancaster regiment for 17 years.

He was based at Pontefract Barracks, before the couple moved to Berlin for four years.

They moved to Chester, Cyprus and Sheffield and Mr Walters retired in 1970.

The couple later became landlords of the Woodman Inn in Pontefract and the Sun Inn in North Featherstone.

They also ran the Skipsea Beach Social Club in Bridlington.

The pair have three children, four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

And they plan to celebrate their diamond wedding anniversary with family at their home on Boxing Day.

Mrs Walters, 78, said the secret to a long and happy marriage was enjoying each other’s company.

She said: “You have just got to give and take. It is as simple as that.”
