Brussels attacks: Wakefield shows its solidarity with the people of Belgium

Wakefield will show its solidarity with the people of Brussels tonight.

The town hall clock tower will be lit up in the colours of the Belgian flag.

Tuesday’s terrorist bomb attacks in the heart of Europe killed at least 34 people and left hundreds injured.

The first attack took place at Zaventem Airport killing 14 people.

And the second at a Metro station during the morning rush hour on Tuesday, killed 20 people.

Islamic State (IS) has claimed responsibility for the latest attacks and issued a statement in Arabic and French which threatens other countries in the anti-IS coalition.

Wakefield Council has confirmed it will be sending messages of condolence and support to the Belgian ambassador.

And the Europe wide minute silence was honoured by council staff yesterday.

In November the town hall clock tower was lit up in the colours of the French flag as a show of solidarity and a tribute to the 132 killed in the Paris massacre.
