Building excellence celebrated at awards ceremony

Contractors and architects from across West Yorkshire gathered in Leeds this week to celebrate excellence in building.

Winners were announced in 13 different categories at the Local Authority Building Control (LABC) West Yorkshire Building Excellence Awards.

The awards recognise the very best building quality, standards, technical innovation and sustainable designs at a local level. It showcased a variety of projects in the region from domestic extensions to commercial developments.

Wakefield’s Unity Works won the top prize in the restoration and conversion – major projects category.

There was also a prize for the best small builder. The award was given to Simon Cornell of Leeds based MSC Joinery and Building Services Ltd.

Another winner was 23 Boathouse Lane, Mirfield which won the gong for the best single dwelling.

The event, which is organised by Leeds City Council and the other four West Yorkshire local authority building control services, was held at Headingley Carnegie Stadium last night (Thursday).

Coun Richard Lewis, Leeds City Council’s executive member for regeneration, transport and planning, said: “We were delighted to host The West Yorkshire Building Excellence Awards in Leeds, which is a fantastic way in which to recognise and celebrate the very best in the industry across the region.

“Big congratulations to all those who were nominated and those who won an award. Hopefully, given the quality we have in West Yorkshire, we will see a number of our winners featuring in the national grand finals this autumn.”

The judges also gave an award to Sycamore Cottage in Eccup in the restoration and conversion – small projects category.

Hird and Partners Veterinary Surgery in Halifax received the commercial award. And Alexandra Mill in Mytholmroyd was presented with the award for new dwellings, 2-10 units.

The winners of each respective category will now have the opportunity qualify for the LABC Building Excellence Awards Grand Finals, which are held in London in the autumn.
