Bus station to get £323k makeover

West Yorkshire Combined Authority (WYCA) has approved funding for plans to refurbish the town’s bus station, improve pedestrian facilities and install new signs.

The Transport Hub project is being carried out by WYCA in partnership with Wakefield Council.

Coun Steve Tulley, South Elmsall Town Council leader, says the scheme could help boost trade in the town.

He said: “It’s long overdue and I welcome the project.

“We are struggling to make the town centre and market work but better accessibility, services and information to get people in and out of the community will only benefit the South Elmsall retail sector.”

Shelters at the Doncaster Road bus station will be replaced by modern units with real-time display screens as part of the project.

A Hub Totem with a digital clock and information panels will be installed and kerb heights will be altered to comply with safety regulations.

Coun Tully added: “It’s something we needed because the bus station is outdated so it’s good they are going to spend some money on it.”

Pedestrian facilities between the bus stands and at Station Road leading up to the railway station will also be improved. WYCA also said it will install new signs in the area.

The project was agreed at the WYCA Wakefield District Sub Committee meeting on October 15.

A consultation on the scheme will start in the next few months and work is due to start in summer, 2016.
