Bus station set to receive£323k boost

Plans for a £323,000 revamp of a town centre bus station have moved a step closer.

Applicant SCP has submitted plans to refurbish South Elmsall bus station, which includes installing real-time display screens and new shelters.

It comes after the West Yorkshire Combined Authority (WYCA) approved funding for the redevelopment project in October last year.

The Transport Hub scheme is being carried out by WYCA in partnership with Wakefield Council.

Coun Steve Tulley, South Elmsall Town Council leader, said the revamp could help boost trade in the town.

He said: “The bus station is very old and has been around a long time so we welcome any plans for improvement.

“We always try to bring people into the community. But over the last few years we have had a few shops close so anything which improves access into the centre must be seen as a positive.

“Castleford, Pontefract and Wakefield all have 21st century bus stations so it is important we have the same.”

As part of the plans, shelters at the Doncaster Road bus station will be replaced by modern units with real-time display screens.

A Hub Totem with a digital clock and information panels will be installed and kerb heights will be altered to comply with safety regulations.

Pedestrian facilities between the bus stands and at Station Road leading up to the railway station will be improved.

The scheme will also provide improved signage between the bus station, rail station and town centre.

If the plans are approved by the council, the work is expected to start in the summer.
