Staff at Wakefield College have gone on strike today in a dispute over pay.

Three unions representing university and college staff called a second day of national strike action after their members rejected a one per cent pay offer.

The University and College Union (UCU), Unison and Unite are taking part in today’s action, which follows a one-day strike on October 31.

Talks between the unions and university employers last week failed to resolve the dispute.

Michael MacNeil, the UCU’s head of bargaining, said: ‘Staff in universities and colleges are taking strike action to say enough is enough.

“They have seen their pay slashed in real terms since 2009 and this year’s miserly pay offer, at a time of rising bills, was the straw that broke the camel’s back.”

A Wakefield College spokeswoman said: “The vast majority of teaching staff are in work as normal and rescheduling has been minimal”.
