Busy road set to be improved

Wakefield Council wants to introduce new car parking bays and a pedestrian crossing on Dewsbury Road.

It also plans to give priority to buses and their passengers travelling into the city.

The new proposals will be on display in the main entrance of Wakefield One on Burton Street until Monday, December 21.

The revised scheme for the Dewsbury Road Transport Improvement Corridor follows a public consultation in 2013.

The previous plans were withdrawn after concerns were raised about changes to the junction of Cross Lane and Dewsbury Road. Those proposals have been removed from the new scheme.

Coun David Dagger, the council’s cabinet member for transportation and highways, said the aim of the scheme was to make better use of Dewsbury Road.

He said: “The consultation in 2013 provides us with useful feedback and that original scheme was withdrawn.

“This revised scheme introduces new car parking bays and a new pedestrian crossing, as well as changes to traffic flows along this busy route.”

The plans have been drawn up by the council in partnership with the West Yorkshire Combined Authority.

If the proposals are approved then the work is expected to start next year.
