Calli walks away from Crufts with Best of Breed title

Crufts is the world's greatest dog show and this year will see around 22,000 healthy, happy dogs at the event, enjoying competing for the coveted 'Best in Show' title as well as the many other competitions that take place at the show, from Agility and Flyball to Eukanuba Friends for Life and Scruffts. Crufts 2016 runs from the 10th to the 13th March at the NEC, Birmingham.

And for one Pontefract pet owner, this year’s Crufts was a cause for major celebration.

Tracy Hopkinson’s pet Calli was crowned top dog in the show’s 125th anniversary year.

The nine-year-old Eurasier left dressmaker Mrs Hopkinson beaming with pride after putting her best paw forward and strolling away with the Best of Breed title.

Mrs Hopkinson, 51, of Purston, has taken Calli to shows all over Europe.

And she was delighted to see Calli recognised at the show in the West Midlands.

She said: “It’s a massive achievement for us.

“We’ve worked towards it for so long so it’s really special for us, even more so because it’s the 125th anniversary.

“For Calli to win best of breed at the age of nine is unbelievable, and we’ll certainly be back next year.

“Crufts is such a special show and there’s nothing quite like it.

“I’ve shown all over Europe but nothing compares to Crufts.”

Calli was one of nearly 22,000 dogs that took part in Crufts at Birmingham’s NEC last week.

Dogs came to compete from 47 overseas countries, including Peru, Philippines and Venezuela.

The winner of this year’s top prize - Best in Show - was Devon, a West Highland White Terrier, from Bishop Auckland in County Durham.

She was crowned champion live on Channel 4 on Sunday evening.

Crufts, presented by the Kennel Club, first took place in 1891, when it had just 2,437 entries.
