Campaign against monarchy comes to Wakefield

A pressure group which wants to abolish the monarchy will be campaigning in Wakefield on Saturday.

Members of Republic in Yorkshire will hand out leaflets in the city centre from 11am-1pm before holding a public meeting at Wakefield Labour Club, on Vicarage Street, from 1pm-2pm.

The group, which is not affiliated to any political party, believes the royal family has too much power and that Britain should have an elected head of state instead of a monarch born into the role.

Republic in Yorkshire coordinator Mark Sutton said: “We are patriots and we believe that our country should be the best it can be. We feel Britain is being short changed by having a monarch.”

Republic in Yorkshire is affiliated to the larger political pressure group Republic.
