Carnival parade coming to town

A carnival parade to bring summer fun to the streets of Horbury is being organised for next year.

A project based at the town’s community centre will see funds raised to organise the summer 2018 event as a celebration of culture in the Horbury.

The Cluntergate Centre has teamed up with the Co-Op Community Fund to raise cash for the event. People are being invited to register with the Co-Op and choose The Cluntergate and Horbury Parade as their preferred project to receive a donation from purchases.

The Cluntergate Centre group said on Facebook: “We are thrilled to have been chosen by the Co-Op Community Fund to be one of their good causes for the next year.

“You can help us raise some money to make something truly brilliant happen by registering Cluntergate and Horbury Parade as your preferred project online.

“This means that one per cent of what you spend comes to The Cluntergate Centre. You can also add your token in the box in store.”

Funds raised will pay for materials and tuition to put together a carnival-style parade in Horbury next summer.

The organisers said more details of the planned event were to be released.

Their appeal for funding via the Co-Op said: “The project will bring excitement and cohesion to our community insofar that collective creative making and play encourages social inclusion and civic pride.

“People from diverse backgrounds, ages and economic backgrounds will come together with the single aim of working together within a project that will have a celebratory impact on the place where they live, and that can be repeated again.”

A programme of activities running at the Cluntergate Centre includes tai-chi, yoga, reading groups, ballroom dancing and walking.
