Castleford's own 'calendar girls' raise funds for children's charity

Paul Sutton, Darren Moore, Graham Rhoads, Terry Mayes, and Kevin Spears - the founders of the Wheel of Light Foundation - are selling the calendars to support the charity's work.

Mr Sutton said: "Some of our wives, girlfriends and friends, inspired by the Calendar Girls musical, said they wanted to do the calendar to help raise funds. We thought it was a great idea and went about producing it and then putting it on sale to support the foundation."

The men set up the Wheel of Light last January to pay for equipment for children with illnesses and conditions.

Most recently, they have donated 10 tablets to Pinderfields Hospital's children's ward and paid for a specialist chair for a five-year-old boy with diploid-triploid mosaicism at Three Lane Ends School, in Castleford.

Mr Moore said: "The chair will stay with him throughout his school life without having to move him to different desks.

"It's going to be a big big help to him in meaning he can work more easily with other children, while getting the support he needs."

Lisa Smith, at the school's office said: "We are thrilled that the Wheel of Light have donated money for the chair, and with school funds being tight, it's a great help. It means the pupil will be able to work on a level with other children."

The charity calendar, which is sponsored by local businesses, is on sale for £5 and can be purchased at The Eagle Pub, The Smawthorne Club and Castleford Bowling Club.

Mr Sutton said: "We would like to thank local businesses for their support in sponsoring the calendar, which has made it possible to print."
