Introduced at Thomas the Baker in Wakefield specially for the week, the Flat Cap is a flat white roll, baked fresh on site and, in true Yorkshire tradition, filled with topside of beef, creamed horseradish sauce and locally made caramelized red onion chutney.

British Sandwich Week runs from May 20-26 and is a celebration of one of the nation’s favourite fast foods – famously named after John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich, who ordered cold beef between slices of bread so he could eat whilst playing cards.

Brits now eat a whopping 3.5 billion sandwiches every year.

Simon Thomas, general manager of Thomas the Baker, said: “We sell thousands of sandwiches in our stores every week, so it seemed only apt that we should celebrate British Sandwich Week.

“And what better way to celebrate than with a special sandwich representing God’s own county – even down to the flat cap shaped bread roll.

“It’s initially just available for the week from May 20 to 26, but if it proves popular we may well make it part of our regular menu.”

Thomas the Baker has 30 stores across the county.

The Flat Cap Special will be on sale in store from May 20 for £3.
