Chair of charity stands down after 30 years of service

The chair of the Daniel Gaskell Foundation has retired after 30 years on the charity's committee.

Christine Cudworth, who served for 22 years as chair, has stepped down to become a trustee of the foundation and Keith Lister has taken over as chairman.

Mr Lister paid tribute to her work. He said: “Christine has undertaken excellent work in her 30 years of dedicated service to the committee. Thousands of young people in Horbury have benefitted through her work.”

Daniel Gaskell built the Daniel Gaskell school in Horbury in 1842 to cater for poorer children whose parents could only afford a small amount of money a week for their education.

When the school was closed, it fell into disrepair and the land was eventually sold. The money from the sale was used to create the Daniel Gaskell Foundation. The foundation helps young people from Horbury to fund and pursue their studies.

Ms Cudworth is continuing her role as a trustee on the Horbury Common Lands Trust, Primrose Hall Charity, and Horbury Heritage Community Building and Management Trust as well as her local history work.
