The city will be transformed into a winter wonderland in the countdown to Christmas.
A range of festive activities will be taking place during the next few weeks.
The build-up starts when singer Jack Walton – who starred in this year’s X Factor – switches on The Ridings’ Christmas lights on Saturday.
Jack, from Castleford, will also take to the stage to perform and sign autographs.
Also joining in the fun will be father-and-son act, Stavros Flatley, who rose to fame on Britain’s Got Talent.
The dancing duo will be putting on a special routine for shoppers from 1.10pm.
Father Christmas, acrobatic elves and two players from Wakefield Wildcats will also be at the event.
Jack will be switching on the lights at 3.15pm.
Festivities will continue with the opening of an ice skating rink on the Wakefield Cathedral precinct on Friday, November 21.
It will be open every day until Christmas Eve between 11am and 5pm each day and until 4pm on Sundays.
Sessions will run for 30 minutes and cost £2.
The Christmas build-up also sees the return of the popular Wakefield Christmas market, which will run on three consecutive weekends starting on Friday, November 21.
It will also be open on Friday, November 28 to Sunday, November 30 and from Friday, December 5 until Sunday, December 7.
The markets will be open from 10am until 5pm each day and until 4pm on Sundays.
Wakefield’s Christmas lights will be switched on at an event in the Cathedral precinct on Friday, November 21, from 6pm.
Trinity Walk shopping centre will stage their own lights switch on at an event on Saturday, November 22.
Elsa from Disney film Frozen will be joined by Father Christmas at the event from 1pm until 5pm.
