City Fields given go ahead - 2,500 homes to be built in Wakefield

The first phase of a multi-million pound scheme to build more than 2,500 homes on the east side of Wakefield has been given the go-ahead.

Wakefield Council’s planning committee voted through a proposal to build 500 homes as part of the City Fields redevelopment at a meeting yesterday.

Architects firm Spawforths, on behalf of Miller Homes, submitted a planning application for the first part of the scheme, which includes a new by-pass for the East side of the city.

The committee granted planning permission for 329 houses and outline permission, which gives consent in principle, for a further 171 homes.

The application also includes the first phase of the Wakefield Eastern Relief Road.

In the long term, the scheme could attract new jobs and £500m of investment, creating one of the biggest regeneration initiatives ever seen in the city under a master plan for the area.
