City is prepared for winter weather

'‹Wakefield Council is preparing to make sure the district's roads, schools and residents are prepared for the winter weather.

The council has welcomed 15 new dedicated gritters this week to help keep the district moving this winter, with more than 6,500 tonnes of grit.

If severe weather hits, the council’s priority is to keep the main roads moving and ensure essential services stay open.

The council will focus on its priority routes, which are used by 90% of the district’s traffic.

There are also over 340 grit bins across the district which will be restocked by the end of November.

Coun David Dagger, Cabinet Member for Transport and Highways, said: “We are already working hard to prepare for any adverse winter weather to help keep our roads moving.

“We hope that everyone will come together again this year to help keep our roads and pavements clear of snow and ice.

Looking after the elderly and vulnerable is important during the colder months. Simply checking they have enough food and their heating is working can make a real difference. Setting the heating to the right temperature (18-21°C) or wearing several layers of thin clothing rather than one thick layer will keep also help.

All residents are reminded to keep a well-stocked medicine chest and a first aid kit to deal with day-to-day illness and injury this winter.
