RUGBY stars will get the city’s festive season underway when the Christmas lights are switched on tonight.

The Wakefield Wildcats, Castleford Tigers, Featherstone Rovers All Stars and Castleford Dance Troupe will perform alongside Wakefield Theatre Royal’s pantomime cast and local singer Lucas Primmer.

And Mayor of Wakefield Coun Ros Lund will switch the lights on in the Cathedral precinct at 6pm.

Wakefield Council’s Victorian Christmas Market also starts today.

Traders will be dressed in Victorian costume offering a range of authentic Victorian goods from unique hand crafted gifts to traditional food and drink on the precinct.

There will be street entertainers and a Santa’s grotto to keep children entertained.

It will also run tomorrow and Saturday, from 10pm until 4pm.

Coun David Dagger, Wakefield Council’s Cabinet member for Culture said: “The festive season is nearly upon us and the switch-ons and festive markets are a great way to boost everyone’s spirits and bring more people into our city and town centres.

“The market has gone from strength to strength over the past few years. It attracts traders and visitors from all over the country because there’s so much to see and do.

“With our regular indoor and outdoor markets at Wakefield Market and Food Hall running as usual there really will be something on offer for everyone.”
