It’s easy to forget how striking and distinctive the city’s architecture is - especially in the Civic Quarter.

And there might be no better example than the area around George and Crown Yard, home to the recently revamped and reopened Elliotts Bar.

It has been taken over by Kieran Hall and Shellie Petts who have modernised its look but kept its classic appeal as a small, laid back bar tucked away in the shadow of the town hall clock.

In terms of music, Elliotts leans toward blues, rock, Motown, soul and indie.

City Tastes and Tipples: A bear, ghosts and a really big beer garden
Between Supper Club, Qubana, Red Bar that part of the city centre has become a popular night out destination.

Kieran said: “As soon as you walk up here on a Friday and Saturday night there’s a great buzz of people, not just coming to one of the bars but going to all of them.

“It’s become a prime location for people to come and socialise and drink.

City Tastes & Tipples: Ben ‘The Bear’ keeps it fresh for the planet
There’s never any bother, it’s just a great little spot.” Kieran has 20 years of experience in Wakefield’s bar scene including a spell at the Admiral Duncan and being part of the opening team from Jock’s Cavern Club in the Bullring.

He said: “Wakefield is getting so much better.

“When Jock’s opened we got together and thought ‘right, we want a nicer kind of bar’.

“The city went through a patch where the nightlife went downhill a bit but we’ve got so many nice bars now.

“There’s more choice and it’s the same with restaurants – you don’t have to go to Leeds to get what you want.

“It’s on your doorstep, but there are still a lot of Wakefield people that don’t realise that.”

Try: The range of craft beers, contential bottled beer and gin. Kieran and Shellie know their products and are happy to point customers in the right direction.

Culture: The bar will soon be a venue for the Artwalk.

Open: Elliotts opens from 5pm and has a late licence.
