AN Outwood post office which closed a year ago will reopen today after space was found to provide the service from a nearby shop.

Morley and Outwood MP Ed Balls will officially open Potovens Lane Post Office at the Outwood Express shop.

Mr Balls campaigned to reopen the Post Office after pensioners were forced to pay for taxis to collect their pensions since it closed in April 2010.

Post Office bosses said they struggled to find anyone to take it over until the Outwood Express owners applied and were selected after formal interviews.

A Post Office spokesperson said: “Since Ledger Lane Post Office closed following the resignation of the sub-postmaster in April last year we have been working hard behind the scenes to restore post office services to this area of Outwood.

“Today’s official opening of the new Potovens Lane Post Office enables us to restore this vital service to the local community and we hope customers will support our sub-postmaster in this venture.”
