And they will then provide equipment and support to give them the chance to try activities like frisbee, football and touch rugby in parks and green spaces.

Coun Maureen Cummings, chair of Wakefield Council’s Community Safety Partnership, which is funding the scheme along with Wakefield District Housing (WDH), said: “This is a great chance to get involved and with the Olympics and European Championships coming this summer, it’s also a great time to be inspired, have fun and get fit.

“Who knows we may find a future Olympic and sports star this summer?”

The scheme, launched by the council and WDH, will be based in areas where housing is provided by WDH.

Steve Rawson, WDH’s managing director of operations, said: “We are delighted to be supporting this fantastic initiative across our estates.

“Having helped identify suitable locations to host the events, we hope to encourage more young people to get active, try new games and enjoy themselves.”

Coun Olivia Rowley, council cabinet member for children and young people, said: “I’d encourage young people to get involved and try something new over the summer.”

Sessions will run on Wednesdays from 5pm until 8pm in Castleford and Wakefield and at the same time on Fridays in Featherstone.
