NETHERTON O / 50s: The club celebrated harvest with a pie and pea lunch. Then harvest items brought by the members were auctioned, to help towards the cost of the meal. Afterwards several games of bingo were played and the usual raffle. The next meeting, on November 9, is a social and games afternoon and will be at Trinity Methodist Church Hall.

THREE’S COMPANY PLUS THREE: Local band Three’s Company Plus Three played at four venues during September and October. These were an evening of Irish Music at St Luke’s Church, Overton; an event at Baildon Golf Club; a 90th Birthday Party at Elm Lodge in Horbury; and the Darby and Joan Club at Middlestown WMC. From these venues £300 was raised, to be shared between Wakefield Hospice and the Oncology Unit at Pinderfields Hospital.

NEW HALL PRISON: The women of New Hall Prison are busy preparing their Christmas gift boxes for distribution in the Ukraine. If you can help with goodies to fit in a shoe box (not least a small teddy bear, soap, toothpaste, etc, but no sweets), please take them down to either St Luke’s or St Andrew’s Churches and they will be passed on to the prison chaplain.

CHESS: Although Netherton was able to field a slightly stronger team in its last Yorkshire League Division 2 match, it was still another defeat as the club went down at home to York R I “C” 2 ½ - 5 ½ . Outgraded on every board Alan Coupe, Ron Atkinson and John Gibbs still managed to gain draws against stronger opposition. York turned up a man short, which gave John Newsome a win by default.

BORN TO RUN: Starting on Monday November 7 is a new venture, Born to Run. Meeting at the Star Inn Car Park, Netherton, it aims to help you get fit, make new friends and save millions of children’s lives. LIGHT LUNCH: On Tuesday November 8 there is a light lunch at St Luke’s Church, Overton. Starting at 12 noon, the cost is £5 including a raffle ticket.

CHRISTMAS MARKET: At St Luke’s Church Hall, Overton on Friday November 18, starting at 6pm, there is a Christmas Market and Santa Night. There are many stalls for you to buy your Christmas presents.

LOCAL PREACHERS: Preachers for November at Trinity Methodist Church, Netherton are as follows -: Sunday November 6, Val Brook; Sunday November 13 (Remembrance Sunday), Gordon Kay; Sunday November 20, John Newsome; and Sunday November 27, Revd Tony Walton (Sacrament Holy Communion). All services start at 10.30am.
