Wakefield Council’s cabinet approved an annual £1.24m payment to the Hepworth, which has already received £6m from the council since it opened in 2011.

Despite the funding, the gallery could still be left with a budget deficit, which could lead to cuts to its exhibitions and collections.

The funding is part of a 25-year agreement between the council and the Hepworth Trust, which runs the gallery and its sister gallery, The Calder.

The council itself is facing £185m in funding cuts but Coun Les Shaw, cabinet member for culture, leisure and sport, said the Hepworth was still value for money as it had contributed more than £22m to the economy since it opened.
