Illegal drivers were taken off the city’s roads at the weekend.

Motorists were caught driving dangerous vehicles, using mobile phones and not wearing their seat belts.

The checks were carried out on Saturday morning by special constables from the Central neighbourhood police team and Wakefield Council officials.

A taxi licensing team took two vehicles off the road and issued two further vehicle defect notices.

VOSA declared that 12 vehicles were not roadworthy and gave another six drivers a set time to fix their defects.

Police issued tickets to four people caught driving while using their mobile phones, two for expired MOTs and one for a defective tyre.

Six people were spoken to for not wearing their seat belts.

The Benefits Agency also made six prosecution cases.
