Calum Whelan was recently sent the letter, supposedly from the council, saying that he was breaking the law by performing on his driveway to entertain neighbours on audiences online during lockdown.

During his last performance the police were called by an anonymous complainant, and then the letter came through his Ruby Street door days later.

The 33-year-old said he was devastated to receive the letter, but following close inspection it turned out to be a fake.

Glynn Humphries, Wakefield Council’s service director for environment and streetscene, said: "We can confirm that we have not received any complaints regarding this. We wholeheartedly support the great examples of communities being neighbourly, spreading some joy and supporting each other during this time.

“We are concerned that someone has falsified a letter, pretending to be from Wakefield Council. This is a criminal offence and is distressing to the person receiving it.

“Anyone with information regarding the source of the letter should contact Environmental Health on 0345 8 506 506."

Mr Whelan said he will continue to perform with his next gig scheduled for this Saturday, May 2, from 5.30pm
