Masked crossbow raider jailed for attack on Wakefield pensioner

Pawel Kurek, 40, struck in August as the 73-year-old victim was in his garden close to Wakefield city centre.

Leeds Crown Court heard how Kurek, who had a pillow case with eye holes cut out over his face pointed the loaded crossbow at the elderly man’s face and demanded money.

Prosecutor Heather Gilmour said Kurek then pointed the weapon at the victim’s stomach and fired.

But fortunately the victim was wearing thick clothing and the bolt didn’t penetrate the skin.

The pensioner bravely fought back and was assisted by an 82-year-old neighbour who armed himself with a garden hoe.

But Kurek eventually overpowered the pensioners and fled to Thornes Park where he was arrested.

Kurek, of White Rose Court, Lupset, admitted attempted robbery, assault and possession of an offensive weapon.

The court heard Kurek, who has no previous convictions, needed money to pay the rent.

Judge Tom Bayliss QC commended the pensioners for tackling Kurek.
