Staff at Knottingley foodbank have said they will have to close their doors after thieves broke into a storage container and made off with more than £500 of donations.

Foodbank manager Janet Burns said: "They took everything. We'd had a massive donation of toiletries and female products on Tuesday.

"Our stocks are so depleted now that we can't carry on. We've been so busy this afternoon, we've had people queuing at the door and we're just having to turn them away."

It is believed the incident took place at around 6pm yesterday (Wednesday, March 18), when a group of four men in dark clothing broke a lock on the container.

They then made off in a waiting silver vehicle.

Officers are now carrying out CCTV enquiries into the theft.

Inspector Phillippa Child of Wakefield East and South East Neighbourhood Policing Team said: “Foodbanks are there to help the most needy in society and this is a disgusting crime.
