Officers were called on Monday, December 21 to a home in Knottingley, where a man knocked on a door claiming to have arrived to test the broadband connection.

The owners were not aware that any appointment had been booked and refused the man entry to their home.

But while he was on the doorstep, he was seen to lean into the property and take a "good look around", officers said.

The occupants became concerned that the man was looking for their 12-week-old puppy, and called the police.

Sharing the story, officers stressed that no dog had been stolen during the incident, but urged all dog owners to be "extra vigilant".

They said: "Please note, no dog was stolen during this incident and this message is just to remind all dog owners to be extra vigilant if you notice anyone acting in a suspicious manner near to you/your property."
