He had also planted bombs outside of mosques in the Midlands to cause wide-spread death and destruction.

The 32-year-old was due to appear at Leeds Crown Court on Tuesday via videolink from HMP Whitemoore in Cambridgeshire to answer a charge of possessing materials that could be combined to make explosives.

However, he was not present over the link and prison staff said he refused to leave his cell.

When Judge Tom Bayliss QC at Leeds Crown Court asked if he could be restrained and brought to court, prison staff then said he had also drawn an obscene "phallic shape" on himself.

The case was adjourned until this morning, Thursday, August 6.
