Mrs Pygott was attacked at the Ferrybridge Road care home less than an hour later after she was confronted by a man at the kitchen door.

Detectives said the stabbing was a “motiveless, awful and unprovoked assault on an elderly lady.”

They are also investigating another earlier incident at nearby care home involving two men and studying CCTV footage from after the stabbing which showed two men running towards the Airedale Estate at about 6.45am.

Det Supt Nick Wallen of the Protective Services (Crime) Division, said: “Enquiries remain ongoing into the very serious assault on Christine and we are now issuing CCTV stills of two men we would like to speak to in connection with the incident, if only to eliminate them from the enquiry.

“The men were captured together on CCTV near to the Picture Street in Castleford in the early hours before the attack on Christine took place. I know the images are grainy but I believe anyone who may have seen the two men together or knows them would recognise them.

“If you recognise yourself, or if you have information to identify these men, please contact Wakefield CID on 101.

“Information can also be given anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
