Chainsaw-wielding vandals hacked down six trees in a park.

The attack took place in Castle Grove Park, off Barnsley Road, last Friday evening.

It was believed the thugs cut through the trunks of the trees with a chainsaw.

Wakefield Council’s service director for environment and streetscene, Glynn Humphries, said: “We received several reports about trees that have been illegally cut down.

“As soon as we were aware our officers went out to the area and began clearing the path to make the site safe for park users.

“This is a great loss to the park and local people. Criminal damage is something we take very seriously.”

The incident has been reported to the police
