A smell of a cannabis farm led officers to discover a crop growing in a Belle Vue loft.

The illegal drugs crop was discovered on Wesley Street on Monday after police searched the roof space of a property.

Inside they found 23 plants and growing equipment.

Insp Richard Clare, of Rural neighbourhood police team, said they were tipped off by members of the community after they noticed the crop’s distinctive aroma.

He said: “We visited a property following reports of a funny smell. Officers knocked on the door and were allowed in and made the discovery in the loft. This is a good result from just simply knocking on someone’s door and it came about thanks to members of the public reporting it to us.”

A 31-year-old man was cautioned for the cultivation of cannabis.

Anyone with details of drugs misuse should call 101.
