Cyclist killed in Doncaster Road crash

Police are appealing for information after a fatal collision in Wakefield this morning.

The incident happened at 7.50am on Doncaster Road, near the junction with Oakenshaw Lane, where a white Ford Transit van was in collision with a pedal cyclist.

The 47-year-old male cyclist suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Road closures were put in place whilst specialist officers examined the scene of the collision to determine the full circumstances of the what took place, but the road has since re-opened.

The driver of the involved Transit vehicle is assisting police with their enquiries.

Sgt Carl Quinn of the Major Collision Enquiry Team said: “The severity of this incident caused disruption to commuters this morning in Wakefield but we are grateful to people for their understanding whilst we were conducting our investigations at the scene.

“I would like to appeal to anyone who was in the area around 7.50am this morning, and may have seen either the vehicle, or the cyclist prior to the incident, or who witnessed the collision itself to come forward.”
