Damning review of '˜inadequate' care home revealed

Manor Park Care Home in Castleford was found to be short staffed, poor at managing medicines and ineffective at training staff to have the right skills and competencies during an unannounced visit by Care Quality Commission (CQC) inspectors in March.

A new report has revealed a catalogue of errors that saw the facility, which is run by the Leeds-based Maria Mallaband Care Group (MMCG), breach five health care regulations.

Inspectors said that although staff had a kind approach and respected people’s dignity, at times they “spoke about people over their heads” which was “not always respectful”.

Debbie Westhead, CQC’s deputy chief inspector of adult social care in the North, said: “The care provided at Manor Park Care Home fell a long way short of what we expect services to provide, which is why we have intervened to keep people using this service safe.”

She added that if the home does not improve sufficiently, CQC will take further action.

Manor Park was rated inadequate in how safe, effective, responsive and well-led its service was, while the care offered required improvement.

The home, which provides accommodation and nursing care for up to 75 people, was also criticised following an inspection in 2014 where it was found to be non-compliant in all areas.

A spokesman for MMCG said: “Senior managers are supporting staff at Manor Park Care Home in order to ensure that the necessary improvements are made and sustained.

“We are confident that we have made the necessary improvements and look forward to demonstrating this.”
